Finally, this martial art is pronounced quite identically in the West but is written with many spellings: Ving Tsun, Wing Tsun, Wing Tsung, Yong Chun, Weng Chun, Wyng Tjun, Ving Tjun, Wing Tzun, Wing Tschun. Wing Chun is the most common form, used to apply to all lineages of this martial art.

Yip Man (Ip Man) first learnt Wing Chun from Chan Wah Shun. At the age of fifteen he travelled to Hong Kong to study at St Stephen's College. While there, he continued to learn Wing chun under Leung Jan's son, Leung Bik. Through Chan Wah Shun and Leung Bik, Yip Man acquired complete mastery in Wing Chun.

Wing Chun can be effective in a real fight because it trains you to react instantly without thinking. It also teaches you how to fight and deliver fast powerful straiight pucnhes at close range. It may not be efective against trained full contact fighters, or tough street fighters who are bigger and stronger than you.
